Scar Management Options
Surgery or trauma causes scars. Unfortunately there is no way around this simple fact. The technical expertise of a board certified plastic surgeon coupled with standard scar management utilizing various forms of silicone compounds or silicone sheeting greatly enhances the odds of achieving an acceptable scar.  This is routine in our practice and is the standard of care. 

However, we want to make you aware that the medical literature has shown that there are other modalities that can further enhance the cosmetic endpoint of scars.   Multiple lasers, such as the pulsed dye laser, the intense pulsed light device, and non-ablative fractional lasers (Re:store) have all been shown in various studies to be effective.  These treatments are not mandatory and are actually above and beyond the standard of care; however, we do have the technology available in our office and wanted to make you aware of it. 

 

The final appearance of any scar is greatly dependent on the patient’s own immune system and scar healing response. It varies with the amount of collagen deposited in response to the injury, as well as the way that this collagen organizes itself.  It has been shown that lasers can improve this organization and diminish the amount of excessive collagen deposited.  Again, this does not guarantee an acceptable scar, but only guarantees that you are optimizing the eventual result of that scar.  There is a cost involved, and that is why these treatments are optional.  We simply wanted you to be aware that such a “laser scar package” is available should scar optimization be a priority to you.  This series of treatments can be effective on post op scars as well as older scars of any kind.

 

Laser Scar Optimization

3 treatments with a vascular laser  (IPL or PDL) at 6 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks
3 treatments with a non-ablative fractional resurfacing laser (Fraxel Re:Store) at 6 , 8 and 10 months
